Avoiding the Most Common Man Killers
The world today is a fairly dangerous place. The air is polluted, the streets are crowded, there are holes in the ozone and even the food we eat and the water we drink may not be entirely safe. Our lifestyles are more hectic and demanding, and at the same time less healthy, than they have ever been. At the same time, entire universes of knowledge and information about our bodies, its strengths and weaknesses, its protection and upkeep are available and easily accessible to us. We know more today about living well and staying healthy than ever before. But we are still suffering from the same chronic conditions and fatal diseases despite this abundance of knowledge and cutting edge medical technology.
A lot of research and statistical data if available on how we live and how we die. It is possible to pinpoint, statistically speaking, the most common causes of death for any subsection of the population in any part of the world. The most common cause of fatality in men is, no surprise, heart disease. There are a wide variety of conditions that can be clubbed under heart disease, each with their own attendant symptoms, issues and treatment. And while there is only treatment to live with heart disease and no real cure as such, there are a number of ways in which one can act to prevent or at least lessen the likelihood of suffering from heart disease. Maintaining good health and a fit body throughout your life drastically reduces your chances of contracting not just heart disease, but also your vulnerability to a number of other chronic conditions.
Regular exercise is the most obvious way to stay in good health. We live in a world that makes it ever easier to slip into a sedentary lifestyle. With cars and other automotive vehicles to transport you wherever you may need to go, walking and cycling or other ways of transportation that actually required some physical activity to get from one place to another become the less convenient and therefore less viable alternatives. Not to mention they take more time, and time is the one thing we absolutely cannot seem to spare in the rushed modern world. It is a choice one has to actively and consciously make to walk instead of taking some form of transportation, even when one's destination is five minutes away or less. With more and more gadgets and machines to make our lives more convenient and do away with the physical activity required for daily chores, we become lazier. The television, the computer and video games ensure that we can stay in one place for the rest of our lives and still be constantly entertained, making it as close to impossible as they can for you to leave your seat once you have taken it. In such a world, it is an uphill struggle to remain constantly physically active, but it is one that must be diligently engaged in, if one wishes to stay healthy.
Eating well regularly is another important thing. We must eat a well balanced and regulated diet that meets all of our nutritional needs, and we must take care to avoid glutting ourselves on things that are too easily accessible to us. Modern fast food, easily accessible snacks and sweets, not to mention the ubiquitous carbonated drinks, are all lures of sugar, carbohydrates, calories and fats that it is all too easy to become habituated to. Alcohol and coffee are other pleasures that must always be enjoyed only in moderation. Smoking has so many harmful effects that it is best to quit immediately if one has had the misfortune to catch the habit. Watching your weight is an important aspect of maintaining good health and avoiding the risk of a variety of ailments and conditions in later life. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables, or healthier meats like fish, and ensuring a regular appearance of nuts and a variety of grains in your diet can do wonders for your health and body.
Lung, skin and prostate cancer are potentially fatal diseases that men are prone to in later life. Though there are no guaranteed ways to avoid them, there are a number of steps one can take in order to lessen one's vulnerability to the risk of contracting these cancers. The most important of these would most obviously be to quit smoking. Avoiding stress or finding ways to combat it is also an important part of maintaining good health. Stress has many detrimental effects on one's health and system. It affects both the metabolism and the immune system of the body, leaving one more vulnerable to disease and weakening the body. Exercise can often be the most effective way to rid oneself of this unwanted guest. Picking up a sport is a good way to ensure that you get regular exercise.
