New Erectile Dysfunction Pill Promises Quicker Action.
According to a biotechnology company, its experimental drug for erectile dysfunction has shown an ability to enable an erection, much faster than other drugs. Vivus Inc is experimenting with a new impotence drug called Avanafil. According to preliminary studies, the drug acts within 30 minutes allowing the development of an erection. Vivus, according to its chief executive officer, will seek clearance to enter the billion dollar erectile dysfunction medication market in 2011. Marketing of the drug Avanafil may begin by 2012.
Vivus studies involved 3 dosages of Avanafil in 646 patients who suffered from erectile dysfunction. Before the study, between 12 and 14 percent of men were able to achieve erections. Men taking the 50mg dose reported attaining an erection 40 percent of the time. Men taking the 100mg or 200mg dose achieved an erection 50 percent of the time. None of the patients suffer from any of the side effects associated with other ED pills, like the vision problems reported by Viagra patients.
These findings will be especially exciting to men who suffer from erectile dysfunction, because of the speed with which the drug acts. Avanafil has been found to be faster acting than Viagra and Cialis. The drug promoters believe that Avanafil will be able to capture a lion's share of the market, because of its fast acting properties. According to Vivus CEO Leland Wilson, efficacy of the drug has been proved to begin in just 30- minutes. No other ED drug shows such quick action. Currently, Viagra has an action time of between 30 to 60 minutes. Cialis research indicates that 30 percent of those who took the 10mg dose and 52 percent of those who took the 20 mg dose were able to see desired results within half an hour, at least once in four attempts.
It's estimated that by 2025, as many as 322 million men around the world will suffer from erectile dysfunction. That will constitute a huge market for ED products. In 2008, Viagra accounted for half of the ED pill market. Cialis made by Eli Lilly and Company had 40 percent of the market, and Levitra made by Bayer AG had 10 percent of the market. Analysts are already estimating potential safes of Avanafil. They believe that sales of the drugs could touch $350 million by 2015, which is about the same market share as Levitra currently has. However, this will depend on how keen Vivus is to spend heavily on extravagant promotion and advertising. Both Viagra and Cialis sell well because they have spent millions of dollars in advertising and sales. Their sales reps visit doctors every day promoting these drugs.
